PURPOSE. This site exists as a simple homage to my favorite pairings in various media over the decades. I am a romantic at heart, and I've created an icon for each couple to serve as a tiny reminder of why I love the love between the characters. Looking for images to create these icons has been a pleasant trip down memory lane, and having finished that, I confess that I draw a special satisfaction in seeing these couples together on one page.<3
DEFINITION. I like a good number of couples, but the ones I feature here are only those I consider my OTPs—the ships I have engaged actively with through their respective fan spaces at some definitive point in my fangirl life. That means I have done one or more of these things: devoured fanfiction; bought doujinshi or fanzines; commissioned fanart; and attended fan-organized events. I also include in this definition the couples from media in which I indulged in frequent rewatches or rereads of the canon, or those couples for whom my fondness plainly did not change despite the number of years since I have watched or read about them. So just because a ship is not here does not necessarily mean I do not like them; it may be that they're just not an OTP of mine.
NOMENCLATURE. The site title is taken from my old domain, northstar.nu (which to this day I deeply regret letting go of). The north star, perhaps better known as "polaris," has come to mean the star to which the earth always faces. It is also used idiomatically to refer to that one person to whom one's heart is anchored. (I first heard it from Felicity Huffman in her 2006 Golden Globes speech, when she thanked her husband William H. Macy and referred to him as her north star. ♡) The phrase is thus perfect as a site title, because it pertains to how the couples themselves are meant to be—almost all of the featured ships are canon (only a few are not)—as well as to the constancy of my feelings towards them, no matter how many years have passed.
